The EU’s 2030 biomethane target at risk despite 22 Bcm biogas output

European biogas and biomethane production has grown by 34% since 2015. Despite this growth, national plans show a major shortfall against the 35 Bcm ambition set by REPowerEU, revealing the sector's structural tensions.

Combined biogas and biomethane production in Europe reached 232 TWh, or 22 billion cubic meters (Bcm), in 2024, according to data from the European Biogas Association (EBA). This 34% increase from the 173 TWh recorded in 2015 positions the continent as the source of nearly half of global production. Within the European Union, production stood at 200 TWh, or 19 Bcm, with biomethane alone representing 52 TWh (5.2 Bcm). Installed biomethane capacity reached 7 Bcm per year by mid-2025, with 1,620 plants in operation.
