Chinese Tokamak EAST Breaks Through Plasma Density Limit and Opens New Perspectives

Chinese researchers announce they have exceeded the Greenwald limit on the EAST tokamak, confirming the existence of a previously theoretical operational zone. This breakthrough could reshape design parameters for future fusion reactors.

The Institute of Plasma Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (ASIPP), based in Hefei in Anhui Province, reports having reached a milestone in magnetic confinement fusion. Experiments conducted on the EAST (Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak) tokamak reportedly exceeded the Greenwald density limit, a physical threshold long considered a major constraint for fusion devices. The results were published in the journal Science Advances.
