DAL Structures Financing for 100 MW of Germany's Largest Battery Storage Project

DAL Deutsche Anlagen-Leasing (DAL) has finalized the structuring of financing for a section of the largest battery storage project currently under construction in Germany. This section comprises two storage units with a capacity of 100 megawatts (MW) and 200 megawatt-hours (MWh), according to data released by the company. The project is being developed and operated by Münch Energie, one of the country's leading decentralized energy providers, specializing in integrated energy solutions and smart grids up to 380 kV. Banking Consortium Mobilized Project funds are being provided by a banking consortium led by DAL/Deutsche Leasing Finance GmbH. The investment volume is reportedly in the mid-double-digit million euro range, according to the company. The standalone system is scheduled for commissioning in spring 2026. According to Münch Energie, this facility could cover the average electricity consumption of approximately 200,000 households for two hours. The two companies have been collaborating for several years. Mario Münch, founder and CEO of Münch Energie, indicates that DAL was selected following a bank selection process conducted in early 2025. He references a previous cooperation on what the company describes as Germany's largest innovation battery, completed three years ago. Expansion Planned to 400 MW The overall project plans for an extension to 400 MW of capacity and 800 MWh of total storage. These additional phases are reportedly already under development and should be completed and commissioned in the first half of 2026, according to information provided by the company. Dr. Peer Günzel, CEO of DAL and head of the Infrastructure and Supply division, emphasizes the financial complexity of these projects due to high investment costs, short technological innovation cycles, and market-dependent revenues. DAL has been involved in financing battery storage systems for several years, whether for companies or as part of subsidized renewable energy installations. The market is gradually shifting from co-location systems, associated with wind or solar parks under innovation tenders, toward standalone installations. Market Growth Prospects Battery storage systems can absorb load peaks, ensure grid stability, and provide short-term energy. According to Bundesverband Solarwirtschaft (BSW-Solar), the German solar industry federation, the installed capacity of large battery storage systems in Germany could increase fivefold by the end of 2026, particularly due to standalone projects. This dynamic reflects the evolving needs of the German electricity grid as it integrates increasing amounts of intermittent energy sources.
